Let’s talk characters: The liking of this book hinges upon one major, debated factor … liking the Dragon. As the terrifying wood draws closer and closer Agnieska will have to harness her powers and strength to save the people and land she loves.ġ. They verbally spar, they fight, but Agnieska quickly learns she is different from other selected girls, discovering hidden powers inside herself that only the Dragon can help her tame. The Dragon is a clean, precise perfectionist. She can’t cook, she can’t clean, she is clumsy and difficult and accident prone. But selection day does not go as predicted and it is not Kasia who is chosen.Īt first terrified, but full of fire, Agnieska has no idea what it is she is expected to do. He doesn’t harm them, but they are forever changed when they return and find they can no longer reside in village life.Īgnieska, born in a selection year, has known her whole life that her beautiful best friend Kasia will be selected and she’ll be left all alone. His price? Every ten years he selects one girl to serve him. One wise, immortal wizard known as the Dragon is the people’s only protection. It was nice to be surprised by what I thought would be a cliché book in which I would see everything coming. An evil, malevolent, murderous wood is determined to consume the kingdom. I mean, we know the forest is sick, but I didn’t expect the cause to be what it was. I also liked that I didn’t really see the end coming. Still, she doesn’t let herself go, and she becomes a wonderful strong woman, and she becomes such an important character! It’s really put subtly, but Kasia is often helpful in small ways at first, and then she gets to shine! I think she might have been my second favorite character after the Dragon!

She has been RAISED to go with the Dragon, so when she doesn’t, she is fully disoriented. Again, love it!īesides this duo, I really want to highlight Kasia, the girl who was supposed to go with the Dragon to his tower before Agnieszka ended up in her position.

The Dragon is totally a cliché, but damn I love it! Agnieszka is a little less so, but she is fantastic all the same, and the attraction between them definitely makes them swoon-worthy. Obviously, their relationship is the highlight of the story. I really liked the magic in the book, and the way Agnieszka and the Dragon slowly get into this teacher/student relation, struggling at first and then blooming as they become closer and trust each other more. No clue which one came out first, but they were both amazing. How can I possibly explain how much I loved this book? I can only fangirl! This is the typical fantasy/romance YA book you think of when someone mentions the genre, but I love it so much! Give me all the fantasy world in danger and only the brooding magician and the girl he somehow is stuck with can save them all.
